THE EYFS
Early Years Foundation Stage is the national statutory framework created by the government that sets out all the welfare and development requirements for children from birth until the August after their 5th birthday. All Ofsted Registered schools and early years’ providers’ must follow the EYFS statutory framework
The set of common principles and commitments are to deliver high quality early education and child care experiences to all children as it:
- Sets the standards that all 'Early Years providers’ must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well
- Ensures children are kept healthy and safe
- Ensures that children have the knowledge and skills they need to start school
The EYFS is made up of
Seven Areas of Development
The Three Prime Areas are:

Communication and Language

Physical Development

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The Specific Areas are:

Literacy

Maths

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design
The EYFS Development Matters Framework also highlights the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ which includes three statements:
- Playing and Exploring (Children are able to investigate new play experiences by having a go at something if they believe it will be enjoyable to them)
- Active Learning (Children are able to focus and hold their attention on something for a lengthy period of time and keep going until they achieve their own goal with absolute joy)
- Creating and Thinking Critical (Children having the ability to tackle a task by figuring out in their own way how to solve a problem)
